Elisa was written for Vanessa Paradis. Jean Becker sent her the script minus the ending, and she was hooked. In 1995, it had been five years since Vanessa's film Noce Blanche, and ten years since Becker's film One Deadly Summer. Elisa is also based around the Serge Gainsbourg song of the same name. At the end, the movie is dedicated to him.

Vanessa plays Marie, a young girl orphaned by her mother (Elisa) who commited suicide on Christmas Eve. Elisa suffocated Marie, but she was saved by paramedics and sent to live with the grandparents who had turned Elisa away and forced her to suicidal desperation. Ending up in an orphanage, she grew up to make friends with Solange (the actress who played her won a Best Female Hope Cesar and is currently married to the exiled prince of Italy). She also makes friends with a young African runaway, and the owners of a bookstore.

When Marie discovers that her father is still alive, she takes the gun with which her mother ended her life, and sets out to find her father, intending to kill him . . . .
